Purpose Preparatory Academy Showcased in National Charter Collaborative’s Nationwide Campaign

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (January 23, 2020) – Purpose Preparatory Academy Founder and Head of School, Lagra Newman, is the focus of the National Charter Collaborative’s (NCC) digital media campaign highlighting stories of success and promise within single-site schools led by dynamic leaders of color. A predominate practice, single-site charter school leaders of color are often omitted from critical conversations about their schools and communities. However, the NCC’s campaign is disrupting the status quo by championing the triumphs and breakthroughs of Lagra Newman and other charter school leaders of color. Also, the NCC will showcase how school leaders of color greatly invest in students, are leading and shaping our communities, and provide a unique perspective to the conversation about the importance of school choice and the vital role of charter school leaders of color.

“My voice as a charter leader of color matters because, as an African-American, this work is personal. By being a leader of color, I am uniquely positioned to effectively validate our scholars. What makes me so happy about the work that we have created here at Purpose Prep is that this school is smart, and a majority of the children are Black,” says Lagra Newman. “I wish that I had had an experience in my upbringing that provided that narrative for me. We’re changing the game of education because we are creating what hasn’t been created before. And we are creating it in communities where it hasn’t been created before. We are creating excellence. And we are proving that it is possible in every community across our nation.”
